Confederate Soldiers |
Wearing a short waisted jacket and trousers, the southerns were easily spotted by the grey or brown colors they wore so proudly. The uniforms were made of an itchy wool material that the soldiers would take off the minute they didn't have to wear them. Their shoes were their weakest part of their uniform. The soles would fall apart from the shoes. Knowing that the shoes had a short life span soldiers would take the shoes off of fallen soldiers on the battle field.

Union Solders |
Union soldiers wore grey or brown wool uniforms that were properly made in factories. The Northerner's were supplied with many personal items that they were able to carry around with them in their belt set or knapsack. These items include changes of socks, writing paper, canteens, wool blanket, tooth brushes, haversacks, stamps, razor, envelopes, combs, and ink and pens. This meant that the union soldiers traveled heavier than the confederate soldiers, but most would agree that it was worth the extra weight.

"Union uniforms were universally of better quality because of numerous mills throughout the north that could manufacture wool cloth and the steady import of material from Europe" (Anonymous 2). This proves that the union soldiers had a better life at war than the confederate soldiers. The mills made making clothing extremely simple. This gave the union another advantage over the confederate soldiers.
